I took this last year, but in retrospect, I think it’s my strongest piece from high school.

Working on this project really made me examine my own opinions, preconceptions and prejudices about “slutty” women and women who choose to cover all of their skin alike. I used to assume that all women who wore Hijabs were being oppressed, slut-shame, and look down on and judge any woman who didn’t express her sexuality in a way that I found appropriate.

I’d like to think I’m more open now.

Take a look at the first picture. more than a 1000 people turned up outside and blocked the gates of the Dail (Irish parliament) tonight to protest against the government’s refusal to grant people access to abortion.

Look at the second picture. RTE news went to the other side of the parliament where there was no one because they don’t want to report a prochoice event in their right-wing media.

This is a small country, it is a very big deal that that many people blocked entry into the parliament tonight. the media had a duty to report this and they didn’t, they decided to skew the whole thing by making it seem like nobody turned up. Scumbags. I know the government controls the media but this is just….. ugh SCUMBAGS.

So along with Youth Defence’s American money, the government’s spinelessness and the church we also have the media to fight against. All the more reason for us to get organised. Pro-Choice campaign launce on December 8th in Dublin. Be there! https://www.facebook.com/events/362873540472506/

17-week pregnant Indian migrant woman, Savita, was killed because she was denied access to an abortion that would have saved her life.

She developed blood poisoning due to miscarrying but when Her and Praveen (husband) begged Galway University Hospital to grant an abortion as her health was rapidly fading, doctors denied and told them ‘this is a catholic country’.

HuffingtonPost: He said his wife vomited repeatedly and collapsed in a restroom that night, but doctors wouldn’t terminate the fetus because its heart was still beating.

When the fetus’s heart stopped beating that was when the fucking doctors surgically removed the remains but it was too late; Savita died a couple of days later.

This is the country I live in. This country says women can only have abortions if their life literally depends on it but women are still being denied an abortion any fucking way. This is the same country that also a while ago, forced a terminally ill woman to travel all the way to the UK to have an abortion because Ireland is too fucking cowardly to allow her abortion here.

Please please please contact the Irish embassy in your country and let them know what a disgusting disgrace it is that people are denied abortions here. Enough with the bullshit stereotype that Ireland is welcoming and sweet-natured; this country prefers people to die rather than have even a life-saving abortion.

An International Day of Action for Legal Abortion in Ireland following the tragic and unnecessary death of Savita Halappanavar will take place on Wednesday 21st of November. There will also be a picket at the Irish Parliament, The Dail.

Pickets will take place at Irish Embassies or central city locations across the world to register our disgust at the death of this woman due to the ambiguity around the issue in Ireland. Ireland’s abortion laws are antiquated and must be changed. This would never have happe

I don’t know too much about this whole thing with the college times but this post is really pissing me off.

The concept of chivalry is sexist, and we’ll define ourselves as a community all we want. There is power in the collective and it is essential that oppressed and marginalised people (including LGBTQ people) band together to push for change. That’s how we got the vote for women, have minimum wage laws, etc. etc. Suggesting that LGBT people are somehow damaging the cause by othering ourselves because we identify as a community is nonsense. We organise to fight for change together, allies are welcome but that doesn’t take away from the fact that LGBT people are going to lead the fight.

Cork Socialist Party & Socialist Youth help to organise protest against Youth Defence

On June 27th, over 50 people gathered outside Brown Thomas on Patrick St. to protest against the anti-choice group, Youth Defence, who were having a stall in Cork as part of their anti-abortion road show. Most of the protesters were young people angered by the group’s advertisement campaign but also their misleading graphic imagery. The demonstration, which was organized in less than 48 hours, received support from many women’s rights groups, such as Choice Ireland, Cork Women’s Right To Choose and Cork Feminista . Many UCC students showed up with placards to join the protest.

The anti-choice group were clearly rattled and in an attempt to drowned out our chants of “Stop the lies - let women decide”. In response, they resorted to turning their pop music up to an extremely loud level and one of the them shouting through a microphone that “abortion is murder” which drove more people away from them. The protesters demonstrated in high spirits for close to two and a half hours and left as a group. Youth Defence were not prepared for such a powerful response and were visibly annoyed and frustrated that they were challenged so publicly on the streets of Cork. The protest outnumbered the Youth Defence and received lots of public support.

People in Cork and around the country are repulsed by Youth Defence’s shock tactics that are not based on fact. They are using outdated statistics, some from the early 1980s, as well as disturbing pictures of stillborn babies they try to mislead people into think are foetuses. They were exposed for what they really are at the protest, delusional fanatics who wish to control women’s bodies. The excellent turnout has left many feeling that with the momentum behind it, a strong opposition to the anti-choice bigots can be formed. end.

Really great work by Socialist Youth and others in Cork on this. Good to see we’re able to outnumber the crazies even at short notice. Well done to Tim and others for pulling together a successful protest.
